Bespoke Storefront, Zero Subscriptions
How we built an instant-loading web catalog for a local traditional butcher, syncing stock via Google Sheets and routing orders directly to WhatsApp—saving them thousands in recurring platform fees.
Keeping Overhead Low for Local Trade
Traditional local butchers don't operate like multi-national e-commerce brands. They don't need complex credit card processors, high transaction commissions, or expensive monthly software fees from Shopify or Squarespace. They need a simple, low-maintenance way to let customers view their products, check availability, and place orders.
The Farm Gate required a solution that matched their operational workflow, cost virtually nothing to maintain, and was simple enough to manage in between serving customers.
DESIGN CHOICE 1: THE WHATSAPP CHECKOUT FLOWAligning Tech with Real-World Workflows
The butcher was already taking many orders through WhatsApp text messages. Instead of trying to force them into a complex new administrative dashboard, we built an order-routing checkout that aligned with what they were already doing.
Client-Side Message Crafting
When a customer finishes selecting their items (like beef cuts, sausage packs, and seasonal boxes) on the web catalog, they click "Submit Order via WhatsApp". Rather than processing payment online, the storefront dynamically generates a cleanly formatted text summary of their order (including quantities and totals) and passes it directly to the customer's native WhatsApp app to send.
Bypassing Meta Business API Fees
By choosing to let the customer initiate and send the message from their own device, the business bypasses the Meta Business API entirely. There are no automated WhatsApp messaging costs, template pre-approvals, or monthly active user fees. It is 100% free for the merchant.
Spreadsheet-Based Catalog Management
We wanted to avoid the need for the client to learn a complex admin console just to change prices or update seasonal stock.
Managed Directly in Google Sheets
The entire product inventory, description details, pricing, and category divisions live in a standard Google Sheet. Our custom storefront reads this spreadsheet data dynamically through a secure server-side cache. When the butcher needs to change a price or mark an item as out of stock, they simply update their spreadsheet. Within seconds, the changes reflect on the live website.
Resilient, Lightweight, and Owned by the Client
We built the site without using bloated website templates or page builders. The front-end is hand-coded, resulting in instant load times on weak mobile data connections.
By keeping the server footprint extremely small, hosting costs are near zero. Most importantly, the client owns the codebase, the domain, and the Google Sheet. There are no locked-in platforms that can raise monthly rates or shut down their digital operations.
